Asian-American. Born deaf at Tainen, Taiwan (Republic of China); attended schools in Taiwan and Santa Rosa, Brazil; graduated Kendall School in 1966; B.A. (1971) from Gallaudet College; M.S. (1973) from the University of Maryland, the first deaf person to earn an M.S. in computer science.
