Summary
Deaf at age 5 from scarlet fever. Went to the Exeter Institution for the deaf as a private pupil, remaining until age 16. Went into his father's antique-furniture business as a restorer and repairer of furniture and antiques, becoming skillful at it. At 21, left his father's business to do similar work for a chain of furniture dealers. During World War I, he went to work as a carpenter in various war munitions factories.
