Summary
Deafened at 8 months by scarlet fever. After failing hearing public schools, was privately tutored, then entered the New York school for the deaf. Discovering talent for art in that school, she was made a pupil-teacher at half pay, then recruited for the art department of the New Jersey School for the deaf. In 1894, added kindergarten classes to her teaching responsibilities. Married George Sidney Porter in 1892.
