Born as Karl Suttka at Ortelsburg, Germany; graduated a German oral school in 1886. Apprenticed to a tailor; upon completion of the apprenticeship, emigrated to the U.S. in 1890 together with his parents and siblings; Anglicized his first name to Charles. Went into tailoring at Louisville, KY; spent 2 sessions at the Kentucky School for the deaf to learn English, returning to his Louisville tailoring job. Married Sadie A. Hughes, Indiana School for the deaf graduate, in 1897. Moved to Danville, KY where he became foreman of the tailor shop at the Kentucky School. Ran a small poultry-raising business on the side.
