Summary
Born near Brookston, IN; deafened in youth from meningitis. Graduated the Indiana School for the Deaf in 1872; attended and graduated from Gallaudet College. After finishing school, returned to the family farm until offered a teaching position at the Indiana School in 1878. Taught there 3 years until displaced by dirty politics, returning to the farm. Later, a change of school administration rehired him and he stayed until his retirement. After inheriting the family farm, he decided to deed the property to the deaf people of Indiana for the establishment of a Home for Aged and Infirmed Deaf, which finally opened a decade after his death.
