Summary
Born in New York City; deafened at age 2 1/2. Attended the Indiana School for the deaf, but did not graduate; B.A. (1885), M.A. (1895), and honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Gallaudet College. Teacher at the Illinois School for the deaf. Gave up teaching to enter the ministry, becoming the first deaf person to be ordained in the Methodist Church (1894); resided in Chicago.
