Born deaf at Staunton, VA; attended the Central Institute for the Deaf, then a public high school, graduating in 1968. B.A. from Antioch College, interrupted for 1 year by study at the University of Manchester, England; learned sign language at age 24. M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois. Professor of deaf education at California State University, Fresno. Author of The silent garden, a guide for parents of deaf and hard of hearing children, which went through two editions. With his hard of hearing wife, Anne, wrote Chelsea: the Story of a Signal Dog.
