Summary
Born near Coatsburg, IL; deaf at age 9. Stayed on his parent's farm until age 18, then attended the Missouri School for the deaf for 4 years. After leaving school, went into the newspaper publishing business, working at several papers until thrown out of employment by the death of one paper's owner. Dabbled in agriculture, made an unsuccessful run for political office, then took positions at Mississippi newspapers.
