Summary
Deafened at age 8 from scarlet fever. Graduated the Maryland School for the deaf, 1878, and Gallaudet College, 1884. Teacher at the Maryland School (1884-1888) and the Colorado School for the deaf (1888-1905); founder of the Maryland and Colorado Associations of the Deaf, and of the Gallaudet University Alumni Association; president of the National Association of the Deaf, 1904-1910. Initiated a NAD project to preserve the sign language of prominent deaf leaders of the time (1910-1920) on motion picture film; himself appeared in one of those films, The Preservation of the Sign Language (1913).
