Deafened by brain fever at age 8. Attended Indiana Institution for the deaf for 9 years, then graduated Gallaudet College (B.A., 1880). Employed as a clerk in Washington, DC government offices and as an assistant chemist in Indianapolis before passing a competitive civil service exam to take a job in the Chicago post office, winning several promotions there.
