Summary
Hearing. Worked as a clergyman in the New York City almshouse (poorhouse), where in 1807 he assembled and taught a small class of deaf children for a short time, until a change in administration discontinued the class. This is the first known formal class (school) for deaf children in America, as opposed to individual tutoring of one or two deaf persons.
