Summary
Born at Brattleboro, VT; grew up in Rockingham; deafened at age 6 by "spotted fever". Student at the American School for the deaf, 1824-1829; teacher at the Ohio School for the deaf, 1831-1841; founded the Indiana School for the deaf in 1843 and was its first principal in addition to being a teacher; retired in 1864, officially due to ill health but apparently actually over a financial dispute with the school's board; later became a successful businessman in Indianapolis. Married Elizabeth "Eliza" Young in 1839.
