Summary
Deafened at age 2 1/2 by encephalomeningitis. Mainstreamed in regular schools from kindergarten through high school. Graduated the University of Illinois; M.S. and Ph.D. in microbiology from St. Louis University, but was initially rejected for study at many medical schools due to her deafness; graduated from Louisville School of Medicine with an M.D. in 1983. Supervising physician of a staff of about 200 at the World Games for the Deaf in 1985.
