Summary
Born deaf; never attended a formal school. Worked at a loom as a boy, but in adulthood went into the barber trade instead. Talented at modeling and carving as a boy, and apparently parlayed this skill into work as a sculptor of model landscapes. Died when he fell off a railroad bridge while walking along the track, apparently having gotten off the train one stop too soon and trying to walk to the correct station.
