Summary
Volunteered for the Canadian army at the beginning of World War I (1914). Rejected at first because of his deafness, he appealed to high-ranking authorities and won permission to enlist, doing so in Jan. 1915 and being assigned to the Medical Corps as a Red Cross orderly. Refused a transfer to the front overseas again because of his deafness, he did stints in Canandian military hospital kitchens and as an escort for prisoners, rising to the rank of corporal, until released from military service at the end of the war.
