Summary
Born in Gwernaffield, Wales and deafened in 1939 by meningitis; attended the Royal School for the Deaf, Manchester, and the Mary Hare Grammar School for the Deaf. After a short time as an assistant librarian and a welfare officer for the deaf, she attended Gallaudet College, graduating 1961; had a short-lived marriage to an American. Member of the (U.S.) National Theatre of the Deaf; returned to Britain in 1977 and became a sign language researcher and program developer with the British Deaf Association. Active in British Sign Language teaching and training of BSL interpreters; author of sign language books, many poems, and A Play of Our Own; died from a fall.
