Born at Indianapolis, IN. Losing his father at age 5, he was forced to light street lights at night to help support his family. Cold and exposure brought on brain fever and deafness. Graduated the Indiana School for thed eaf in 1881, working part-time for his own support; offered a permanent job when he finished school. Held several responsible clerical jobs with various companies and agencies. For a while, editor of the Deaf-Mute's Progress.
