Summary
Hearing daughter of deaf parents. Teacher at the Wisconsin School for the Deaf; sent by the U.S. government to establish education for Philippine deaf (this being totally ignored by the Spanish during their ownership of the islands prior to 1898). It took her 3 months to find her first deaf pupil, and slowly she collected 21 more, out of an estimated 2000 total. She established a school for the deaf at Manila, Philippines, in 1907 and taught there for 18 years; awarded an honorary Doctorate of Pedagogy from Gallaudet College, 1955.
