Born deaf at Westport, Lanarkshire; became the fourth pupil of Thomas Braidwood. Singled out for attention by Samuel Johnson when he visited the Braidwood school. Left the then-substantial sum of 100 pounds to the Edinburgh Institution for the Deaf and Dumb upon his death.
