Born at Spring Valley, MN; deaf at 5 from scarlet fever. Entered Minnesota School for the deaf at age 8, graduating in 1890; Gallaudet College, 1890-1894 (B.A.). Appointed a teacher in the Minnesota School from 1895 on. Invested in land in Wisconsin and North Dakota, homesteading the latter.
