Summary
Born at Dubuque, IA; deafened at age 12 by meningitis. Entered the Iowa School for the Deaf 1875-1878, then graduated Gallaudet College in 1886. Worked 2 years in the Smithsonian Institute's bureau of international exchanges, then became a cataloger for the library of the Smithsonian's National Museum from 1888 onward. Also taught gymnastics at Gallaudet College beginning in 1890. Retired in 1920 due to contracting "sleeping sickness".
