Summary
Born in Wayne Co., KY; family moved to KS when he was 3. Attended the Kansas School for the deaf but withdrew due to poor health, changing to the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind. Appointed under-sheriff [deputy sheriff] of Greeley County, CO 1893-1897, possibly the first deaf person to have police powers (he performed all the normal duties of sheriff). In 1896, bought a half-interest in the Greeley County Republican, becoming assicate editor of that paper.
