Summary
A deaf licensed practical nurse, she was rejected by nursing programs for training as a registered nurse (a more sophisticated and better-paying nurse rating). She took her litigation to the U.S. Supreme Court, which in 1979 ruled against her and in favor of Southeastern Community College, saying that the ability to hear was necessary for the registered nurse program. This aroused much agitation and anger in the disabled community.
