Born deaf at Walkerton, ON; E.C. Drury School for the Deaf 1965-1974 and Robarts School for the Deaf 1974-graduation 1979. Further education and certification qualified her for the National Lifeguard Service and licensed her for teaching aquatics, making her the first deaf lifeguard in Ontario and possibly the first in all of Canada. Worked at the Robards School as lifeguard and swimming instructor, plus at first residential counselor and then as classroom assistant for special-needs students.
