Summary
Born in Erie County, PA; deaf at age 1 from inflammation of the brain. Entered the Ohio State School for the Deaf, 1868 till graduation. He then entered Gallaudet College, but had to withdraw after 2 years due to his father's poor health. Became a printer for a Cleveland publisher for 6 years, then went to California for his own health, taking a job with the California News at the California School for the Deaf, Berkeley, also teaching a printing class there. After 7 years he diverged into Spanish printing for 2 more years. In 1896, returned to Cleveland to head a new school for the deaf there, but was pushed out of his position after 1 year since the school was oral. He then returned to the printing business in Cleveland.
