Summary
Hearing. Born at Meissen; student at the Universities of Leipzig, Wittenberg, and Berlin; studied under Samuel Heinicke, whose daughter he later married. Established the first school for the deaf in Berlin, 1788, which moved to Schoenhausen, 1791, eventually becoming the Royal Berlin Institute for the Deaf and Dumb. After Heinicke's death, Eschke took over the role as primary advocate of the oral method.
