Summary
Born at Kilmarkock and deafened by brain fever during infancy; attended the Glasgow Institution for the Deaf and Dumb, then apprenticed in the glass-staining trade, spending most of his working life in Liverpool. Beginning 1864, was a volunteer and then a paid official in the Adult Deaf and Dumb Society of Liverpool, a religious outreach organization; in 1879, he was appointed a missioner (missionary). Also wrote articles on various topics for the newspapers. Retired in 1912 and died after a short illness.
