Summary
Born at Hamburg, Germany; deafened at age 5 by a fall from a carriage. Fluent in the major European languages plus Latin, Greek, Arabic, and Malay. 1806-1838, held various government jobs, the last as Secretary-Interpreter to the Minister of Foreign Affairs; retired to Rouen; author of many articles and translator of many books.
