Summary
Born at Hartford, CT; deafened at age 5 by measles and scarlet fever; attended public schools and then the American School for the Deaf, graduating in 1943 at age 16. Bachelor's (1949) from Gallaudet College, then taught at Texas School for the Deaf for one year; at American School two years; teacher, administrator, and coach at West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind. In 1962, became involved with the new Captioned Films for the Deaf program, eventually becoming its head. Pushed through the development of closed captioning for television.
