Summary
Made the first scientific expedition to the Amazon River basin; his observations revealed the true "oblate spheroid" shape of the Earth; demonstrated that mountains exert gravitational attraction of their own. Died during an operation to treat paralysis. A crater on the Moon's far side is named in his honor.
