Attended the California School for the Deaf, Berkeley; at age 20, apprenticed in an Oakland, CA bakery. His apprenticeship was shortened by 3 years due to his skill, and he worked at a succession of bakeries in the San Francisco Bay area. At age 33, he leased a bakery building in Lafayette, CA and started up a family bakery business of his own, The Cake Box, soon buying the building outright.
