Progressively deafened. Excluded from Harvard Medical School because of her sex, but succeeded in entering and graduating Johns Hopkins Univeristy Medical School, specializing in cardiology. Head of the Johns Hopkins heart clinic and president of the American Heart Association; known for her work with Alfred Blalok in developing the Blalok-Taussig heart operation to save cyanoitic infants or "blue babies", first performed in 1944.
