Summary
Hard of hearing since early childhood; attended the Tewin Water School for Partially Hearing Children in Welwyn Garden City. Held three part-time jobs: cleaner at an industrial park, gas station attendant, and bartender in a pub where he also lived in a room. One evening, after the pub closed, he left to get some cash from an ATM and then buy some takeout food. His body was discovered in an alley 2 1/2 hours later, killed by a blow to the head but not robbed. Since Newman was bisexual and the alley was a well-known spot for sexual activities, it was speculated that Newman was a victim of a pick-up gone bad. As of early 2002, no suspect had been identified and the murder remained unsolved.
