Summary
Born at St. Louis, MO; deafened by scarlet fever and measles at age 1. Went to the New York Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb starting 1859, then entered Gallaudet College (B.A., 1876). Taught at the New York school from 1876 onward. Later earned an M.A. from Gallaudet.
