Hearing. Founded a charity in the 1950s to provide shelter and training for disabled adults in Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe); later addressed the specific needs of deaf people, opening the Naran Centre, a school for deaf and blind children in Gwelo (now Gweru) in 1968. The blind pupils went to a new purpose-built school and the Naran Centre became a school exclusively for the deaf in 1981.
