Summary
Deaf in early childhood from illness; attended the Titirangi School for the Deaf beginning 1960, then the Kelston School for the Deaf before transferring to regular schools in Waterview. Before finishing school, he was virtually shanghaied into a job at a shoe factory. Fired from that job, he worked at a variety of factory and other blue-collar jobs, then was employed by New Zealand Post as a mail-sorter. Later he had a similar job for a courier company. Married a deaf woman.
