Summary
Deaf at 5 in one ear from scarlet fever and ototoxic medication; hearing in the other ear began to decline too. B.S. (1966) from McGill University, M.A. (1967) from Teachers College of Columbia University. Taught for 3 years in an oral preschool for the deaf. Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, 1975. Married Harold "Howie" Shapiro. Became a professor of special education at Temple University for 2 years, but lost the job to budget cuts. Took another teaching job at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry.
