Summary
Hearing. Born in the Netherlands as Roelof Huysman ("Rudolphus Agricola" is the Latinized form of his name). Became a teacher of philosophy at the University of Heidelberg; while there, he taught a deaf child (name not recorded) to communicate orally and in writing. He wrote a book about his deaf education effort, De inventione dialectia, published posthumously in 1538. His ideas were adopted over 50 years later by Girolamo Cardano (q.v.).
