Summary
Born on the Navajo reservation near Shiprock, NM; deaf from ear infection at age 4. Briefly attended a hearing Indian school, then entered the New Mexico School for the Deaf in 1952 and left in 1958 because he had reached the school's maximum age. Worked for a while as a shoe repairman, then worked as a uranium miner in Utah 1960 until the mines closed in 1962. From 1964 until retirement in 1989, he operated heavy construction equipment on jobs within the Navajo Nation.
