Born deaf. Attended JHS 47 and DeWitt Clinton HS in New York City. B.A. in 1932, B.S. in chemical engineering in 1933, and M.S. in chemical engineering 1934, all from Columbia University. Specialized in electro-chemistry; wrote articles for scientific journals. Married Martha Bauerle, also deaf, in 1939. Active in the Union League of the Deaf and served as first president of the New Jersey Association of the Deaf. Died at Berkeley Heights, NJ. Deaf daughter was Nancy Bloom Rarus Shook (q.v.).
