Hearing. Born and died at Asheville, NC; B.A. (1942) from University of North Carolina; master's (1948) from University of Tennessee; Ph.D. (1953) from George Peabody College for Teachers. Dean of the College of Education at the University of Tennessee 1961-1969; 4th President of Gallaudet College, 1969-1983, then retired to Asheville. The Merrill Learning Center building at Gallaudet University is named in his honor.
