Asian. Native of Beijing, China; graduated Beijing #4 School for the Deaf. First deaf person to attend Beijing Xicheng Teacher's School. Taught Chinese reading and writing to deaf students at her former high school, then attended the Capital Normal University, again the first deaf person there; graduated 1994. While at CNU, met and married Bill Peters, a hearing American studying Chinese there, in 1996. Peters encouraged Yang to get experience with American deaf education, and she came to America in 1997 to get a master's degree in deaf education at Rochester Institute of Technology. After finishing her master's, she came to Gallaudet University for Ph.D. study in deaf education. Planned to teach in an American deaf school for a few years, then go back to China and teach there.
