One of the pupils in the first class (1855) at what is now the Iowa School for the Deaf. Born in Ohio, attended the Illinois institution for the deaf for 2 years before transferring to the new Iowa school at age 16, remaining 5 years. Married classmate James Henry Henderson (q.v.) in 1860.
