Born deaf; entered the Iowa School for the deaf at age 9, graduating at 16. Gallaudet College for 2 years. Appointed a teacher at the Iowa institution for the deaf for 4 years, then went into farming, with an emphasis on stock raising. Married first to Molly Kennedy in 1872; after her death, remarried to Mary Luella Golden, having children by both wives. Lived for a time in Missouri and later farmed in Kansas.
