              Born deaf at Southampton, Hantshire, England, and attended the Brighton Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb 1860-1872. At first worked in his father's attorney office as a secretary, then became interested in religious work. First born-deaf person to be ordained a deacon in the Church of England, May 21, 1885; presented to Queen Victoria, Jan. 16, 1886; ministered in the diocese of Winchester, mainly in Southampton and Portsmouth, for 43 years, retiring at age 68 in 1921. Died at Winchester.
