Summary
Born in Iceland as Johannis Hjartarson; emigrated with his family to Gimli, Manitoba as a small boy. Went to the Manitoba Institution for the deaf 1889-1905, then became a homesteader near Lipton, Ontario 1905-1907. He sold his farm, but remained to work on other deaf farmer's threshing crews for another 5 years. After 1921, worked as a printer in Winnipeg, Manitoba, moved to British Columbia, and by 1939 had moved back to Manitoba.
