Summary
Hearing. After first teaching at the (hearing) Ritterakademie in Vienna, taught at the K. K. Taubstummen-Insitut (Imperial and Royal Institute for Deaf-Mutes) in Vienna 1818-1842. Wrote a manual on deaf education, Versinnlichte Denk- und Sprachlehre (1836, second edition 1844), said to be the first work on deaf education to enjoy an international audience. In it, he stated that not to support the education of the deaf is both morally and legally unthinkable, and he also asserted that language, whether oral or sign, could not be learned without first learning to think.
