Summary
Deafened at 6; graduated the Wisconsion School for the deaf in 1885 and Gallaudet College in 1892. Tried ranching in Montana, but in 1893 came to Akron, IA, virtually penniless and friendless. Managing to buy a half interest in the Akron Register despite lack of any newspaper or printing experience, he studied the field and became a master at it. Married Cora L. Rexford, Nebraska School for the Deaf graduate, in 1897.
