Summary
Born at Moscow, WI; deafened by brain fever at age 7 1/2. Graduated the Wisconsin School for the Deaf in 1879; B.A. (1884), M.A. (1887) and honorary D.Sc. (1916) from Gallaudet College. Teacher in the Wisconsin School, 1884-1920; became an authority on, and wrote widely on, "manual" (i.e., industrial) training for deaf people. Also wrote a history of the Wisconsin School.
