Summary
Born at Greenville, SC to deaf parents; any residual hearing was lost to typhoid fever. Failure in public school led to entering the South Carolina School for the deaf at Cedar Spring, ages 7 to 15. Four years at home were followed by entering the Kendall School in 1893, then Gallaudet College in 1894, graduating 1899. Appointed to teach at the South Carolina School in 1899, where she met and married George A. Brooks. They moved to Texas, where she became a teacher in the Texas School for the Deaf.
